At 1st Billingshurst we are very proud of our links with
the Royal British Legion and do all we can to support their
poppy appeal. In 2006 our leaders
received a
special award to thank us for our contribution. In 2009 we once again helped sell the poppies, attended
the Remembrance Sunday parade and then counted the money. In
fact you could say that we went poppy mad - or at least that
is what it said in the local newspaper -
The Resident.
Poppy selling
On Tuesday 3 November we spent our pack meeting selling poppies outside Budgens and Tesco. We are delighted to report
that the warm people in Budgens collected £36 while the cool Cubs outside Tesco
collected a most respectable £66. So that is just over £100 for the British
Legion collected in 90 minutes or so. Well done.
Remembrance Sunday
On 8 November 2009 we took our place in the Remembrance
Sunday parade. Despite the pouring rain at the start we had
an excellent turnout. It was particularly nice to have Jack
back with us after his recent illness.

Thanks to Sarah Wilson for providing the photo. There are
more of Sarah's pictures in our
2009
gallery.
A number of Cubs had special jobs to do on the day. Well
done to all of you who made us proud to watch you in action.
- Colour party: Tom (flag), Michael & Laurence (escorts)
- Wreath: Matt (wreath bearer), Tom Crabb & Sam (escorts)
- Prayer candle: Callum
- Lead poppy: Alfie
As usual everybody that came on the day got 10 points and those with special jobs got an extra 15 as
they were representing the group.
Poppy cash counting
On 10 November we spent our pack meeting opening the poppy
collection tins and counting the money they contain. In 2007 we counted
£766 which we thought was pretty good going. Last year there was an amazing
£1766 including over £400 in notes. This year we had £784.22 although being
10 November some of the tins were still collecting and so it is not a
complete total for the area.
