The Billingshurst Show takes place on Sunday.
We will have our own Parbrook float in the
parade to make best use of the jungle animals and leaves that we have been working on over the last
few weeks. The show theme is "In the jungle" and so we are "In the Jungle Book"
as the Jungle Book characters are so important to Cub traditions.
Each Cub on the float will wear their monkey
mask that we made at Cubs a few weeks ago. We ask you to wear a "monkey
coloured" (i.e. orange/brown) top to go with it. We will have the "Bear necessities" song to
sing along to on our journey. One of our Cubs has been chosen to be Mowgli as
our scene has him captured by the monkeys in the story where he is taken to the
Cold Lairs. You should also bring your scarf as you will need it later on the
stall.
Saturday
The actual construction of our float takes place up at Redmire Stables. They
generally have a number to construct and so the timing for the day is a bit
uncertain. Last year ours was the last to be made and so it was well into the
afternoon before things were ready to be assembled. We hope something similar
will happen again this year. Anybody with creative flair who would like to be
involved in the assembly of our float (mostly stapling our designs to the wooden
sides of the lorry) please meet us at the hall at 3pm or at the stables from
3.30pm.
Sunday
We hope that all the Cubs will be able to
join us for the parade or alternatively help to staff our stall in the main
show. The float should be available at near the Village Hall from
around 11am on Sunday. We will use the time to do the last minute decorations
and fit the bits that might not have made the journey from Five Oaks. We
would welcome help from a few parents from around 11-11.30am to help finish off
the float.
The parade starts from near the Village Hall at 12 noon.
Cubs need to be there by
11.45am so that we are ready for the start of the parade. For the parade itself the Cubs will sit on the
bales on the
back of the lorry. Apart from joining in with the song
we hope that they will look cheerful and wave to the crowds – rather than
sitting in a huddle chatting as has happened previously! Baloo and Akela will be
travelling on the float. Parents please bring your digital cameras as Akela will
be on the float so unable to take pictures.
After the parade arrives at the show we have to quickly dismantle the float and
then concentrate on running our stall. We have a "snakes in the grass" game to
run and also have jungle tattoos to sell. Raksha will be in charge of our stall and will get set up while the
rest of us are on the float. We would like some Cubs to help us out on the stall
and thought it might work out best if we allocated times to each six:
-
Blue six: 1pm to 1.30pm
-
Red six: 1.30pm to 2pm
-
Green six: 2pm to 2.30pm
-
Yellow six: 2.30pm to 3pm
We hope that the Cubs will be able to take
their turns on the stall. When not doing stall duty there is the rest of the
show to explore. See
www.billingshurstshow.org.uk for more information.
Our team of six Cubs will be challenging the Brownies to a race through our
obstacle course which will be set up in the central arena. We hope to be able to
confirm the time of that soon.
Important: the show organisers have decided to charge admission at £1 for
adults (children free) this year. You will get a free programme rather than
having to buy one.
Raffle tickets
If you have not yet returned your raffle tickets please put them in an
envelope (either unsold tickets or counterfoils and money) with your name on it
and push them through Raksha’s door or bring them along on the day of the show.
In previous years we have run out of tickets so it is worth returning any that
you have not been able to sell.
We are very grateful to Baloo for representing us on the organising committee
through the year and for coming up with our design. Thanks also to the parents,
especially Ann and Denise who have been helping us put things together for the
float.
