The
Billingshurst Show takes place on Sunday
19 June.
The show theme is "musicals" and we
will have our own Parbrook float in the parade to make best use of the masks and
decorations that we have been creating in pack meetings over the last few weeks.
Decorating the float
Our float will be themed as "the Lion King" and so we will be making
jungle animal
masks. We hope to use carpet tubes to make bamboo and will also make
birds and butterflies to decorate the side of the float. We're grateful to Nick
Chapman for helping us with the animal designs for the float.
Raffle tickets
Before the show we'd be grateful if you can sell the raffle tickets that you
have been given. Don't forget to bring back the money and counterfoils before
the show. It helps us if you can put them in an envelope with your cubs name on
it. In previous years we have run out of tickets so it is worth returning any that
you have not been able to sell.
Our stall
We will be running a tombola stall. If you would like to donate any prizes
then please drop them
off in Raksha's porch or bring them along on the day. The Guides are running a
chocolate tombola so we don't want to duplicate with them. Donations of things
like cartons of drink, tinned goods and child friendly items will be welcome. We
aren't allowed to have alcohol on our stall.
Other events
You can find out about the other things that will be happening at the show
and also all about the sponsors of the event at the
Billingshurst Show website.
Saturday
This year our float is coming from E P
Clark & Co in Wisborough Green. We are extremely grateful to them for
stepping in at the last minute when our normal float from Redmire Stables was
unavailable. The actual construction of our float will take place in their yard
and it will be stored under cover overnight. We'll be going to the yard at 10am.
Anybody with creative flair who would like to be involved in the assembly of our
float (mostly fixing our designs to the wooden sides of the lorry) please let
Baloo know.
Sunday timeline
|
9:00 am
Set
up |
The organisers have sent out a request for adult help
as they would welcome assistance from about 9am to get the field
set up. There are lots of tents and bits of equipment to be set up plus tables
to be delivered to the right places. |
|
10.45 am
Float arrives |
The float should be available at near the Village Hall from
around 10.45am on Sunday. We will need to do the last minute decorations
and fit the bits that might not have made the journey from Wisborough Green. We
would welcome help from a few parents to help finish off
the float. |
|
11:45 am Get
onboard |
We hope that all the Cubs
will be able to join us for the parade.
Cubs need to arrive by 11.45am at the latest so that we are ready for the start of the parade.
For our
Lion King theme you should wear a bright coloured t-shirt, preferably yellow,
orange, red or green with your group scarf. This will add extra colour along
with the birds, butterflies and animals that we'll have on the float. We'll give out your
animal masks on
the day and would welcome a helpful parent to assist in fitting the elastic onto
the masks and then onto the Cubs. |
|
12 noon
Parade starts |
The parade starts from near the Village Hall at 12
noon.
For the parade itself the Cubs will sit on the
back of the lorry on benches. We hope that they will look cheerful and wave to the crowds – rather than
sitting in a huddle chatting as has happened previously! Baloo and Akela will be
travelling on the float. Parents please bring your digital cameras and let us
have your photos afterwards - Akela will
be on the float so unable to take pictures.
It take a surprisingly long time to get to the field but the parade has
to go at the speed of the groups that have chosen to walk rather than
have a float. There is also the little matter of getting through the
crossing - we always seem to get caught by a train. By the time we get
there we'll be glad that we had our benches to sit on! |
|
1:00 pm
Parade arrives at field |
The
group is looking for parents to help man the gates to the field and
collect the admission money. Please let
Natalie
know if you can help.
After the
parade arrives at the show and has been judged, our float will go off to
be dismantled. Help with that is always welcome as we want to preserve
as much as possible to use at our jungle camp in July. |
|
1:30 pm Cubs
man our stall |
Raksha will be looking after
the stall and will get set up while the rest of us are on the float. We're told that
our stall will be at the edge of the arena near the tennis courts this year. We hope that the Cubs will
be able to take their turns on the stall during the afternoon.
To avoid crowds of helpers we've allocated time by six with
Red six
taking the first turn. If you can't do your proper slot then please come
along when you can. While you are not doing stall duty there is the rest of
the show to explore. |

Clear up |
Anybody who is still around after about 4.30pm
would be very welcome to help take down tents and carry equipment back into the
hall. You can let Natalie know that you can help by replying to her
request for adult help or by
contacting Baloo (you'll find her contact details at the bottom of our
programme for the term). |
Don't forget that admission to the show costs £1 for adults (but children are free). You will get a free programme rather than
having to buy one and an entry sticker so that you can come and go as you please
once you have paid. You will be able to get your sticker at the start of the
parade to save a scuffle at the entrance to the field.

Visit our past events page for a reminder of our
Billingshurst Show entry
for 2010 (Kung Fu Panda) or
2009 (In the
Jungle Book).
We are very grateful to Baloo for representing us on the organising committee
through the year and for coming up with our design
